The bus stopped outside the port entrance, where they followed the returning crowds into the terminal. After showing their cards to the security guard at the entrance, they found a bench in the terminal building. By this time, Carlos’s colour was back to normal.

“I’ll call Jason and let him know we’re here.”

After making the call and putting the phone back in her shorts pocket, Rachel turned to Carlos.

“He’ll call us in fifteen minutes. Shall I get some coffee?”

Carlos nodded and Rachel headed towards a café to get drinks. As soon as the smell of food hit her, she realised she hadn’t eaten since breakfast and was famished. There wasn’t much choice of the takeaway variety, so she bought two panini filled with salami and salad.

Turning around with the food and drinks, she was exasperated to see the irritating sight of Helena once again sitting next to her husband. Huffing heavily, she headed purposefully towards the couple, almost taking someone out in the process.

“Hey, watch where you’re going!”

She turned to say sorry and came face-to-face with a woman in officers’ whites.

“I’m so sorry. I wasn’t looking.”

The woman’s face was wild, but nowhere near as wild as the hair. Rachel suspected from Sarah’s description that she had run into the new doctor who was giving the medical team so much trouble.

“Clearly!” the woman snorted before turning and marching off in disgust. Rachel giggled as she noticed the grouchy doctor bumping into an elderly gentleman who gave her a piece of his mind. The scene was like something from a skit where a situation goes from bad to worse in minutes.

Smiling to herself, Rachel had temporarily forgotten why she was in such a hurry. She turned back to head towards Carlos, who was now minus his new fashion accessory. She was pleased the coffees hadn’t spilt, but she almost threw his at him.

“What’s the matter?” he asked.

“Don’t give me that. What was she doing here?”

Her ‘don’t you dare deny it’ look worked and stopped his imminent protest.

“Do you mean Helena?”

“Unless you have a string of ex-lovers stalking you, yes, I mean her.” Rachel couldn’t bring herself to acknowledge her rival’s name.

“Jealousy doesn’t suit you, Rachel.” Carlos grinned, sheepishly.

“And sneaking around behind my back doesn’t suit you,” she snapped.

“I’m not—” He thought better of continuing with the protestation. “Darling, I think you’re hungry. Why don’t you eat that,” he nodded towards the panini, “and have some coffee?”

Now he was being infuriatingly reasonable. She bit into the panini with such venom, she surprised herself.

They spent the next few minutes in silence, both eating, drinking and musing on how to break the ice that had developed between them. Rachel felt guilty for being annoyed with her injured husband and was angry with herself for her overreaction. But was it?

“Just tell me, Carlos, why that woman is around every time I turn my back. Are you still attracted to her?”

At that moment, the phone vibrated in her pocket. The relief on Carlos’s face was obvious.

She snapped into the phone, “Yes.
